A classical choir for children 8-18 with a music education class for children 5-7. The children sing a variety of music in 3- and 4-part harmony. Each semester there is a balance between classical, folk, patriotic and just for fun music! Correct singing techniques are taught in an integrated choral experience where the love of music is emphasized. The children sing in several languages including English, German, Latin, French, Zulu, Spanish and Swahili. Because of the wide age range within the choir, there are many smaller group ensemble opportunities, and the older students often work on a number of more complicated pieces separately from the rest of the choir. The younger students also have some simpler songs, although they constantly amaze us all by joyfully entering in with the older students in the very hardest songs!

Concentrating on a foundation of proper vocal production, this class will teach students how to project their singing voices with expression and clarity. Each student will have a solo piece that they will work on for mastery, as well as joining the group in exploring some of the great musical theater ensemble pieces. This class will coordinate with the Musical Theater Dance class. The semester will culminate with a public performance showcasing the work of the students, individually and as a group.

Everyone can sing! Believing the singing voice is the most perfect instrument, the instructor will help students to find their natural voice and use it to its fullest potential. Breathing, posture, placement, resonance – all aspects of proper vocal production will be covered in our work together. Students will work individually to explore different styles of singing, based on classical techniques. Each student will learn an Italian art song, a traditional folk song, and a song of their choice - with suggestions from the instructor. Music theory, the understanding of how music works, will be an integral component of this course and the students will gain an understanding of rhythm, pitch, and composition that will open a deeper understanding of the musical language that unites us all, throughout history and cultures.
